ALEXANDRIA (News Channel 5) -- More than one hundred runners and walkers laced up their shoes Saturday morning for a 5K and one mile walk to raise awareness for autism.

Autism is a disorder that can lead to difficulties with social interaction and communication.

Many at the race have been directly affected by autism or know someone who has.

The group says it goes to show by the number of people who participated, just how important raising awareness for autism is.

"I'm extremely proud of how much we've grown in a short period of time," said Brandie Neely of the Cenla Autism Network. "The sad thing is, the prevalence of autism has also grown to 1 in 66 kids. So, as fast as we grow, that's how fast the prevalence grows. I'm just excited that people understand the importance of awareness for autism and how serious it is and that they're willing to support our cause."

This is the second year the group has held the race.
