Body discovered near Airbase Road in Alexandria

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) -- The Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office has identified a body found early Wednesday morning on Cappel Road in Alexandria.

Investigators say the man was 27-year-old Leon Matthew Jeffers of Alexandria.

Investigators received a call from a neighbor who lives on the road who found the man's body near a ditch.

News Channel 5's Brooke Buford has the latest.

Adam Arnold was on his way back home from an early morning trip to the store, when he says he caught a glimpse of a man on the ground near a ditch by his house.

"I thought it was a drunk," said Arnold. "I just came home to my house. I waited until it got daylight, maybe 30 or 45 minutes. I came back out to see if he was still out here. I walked back out and he was still in the same exact position."

Arnold called 9-1-1. When the Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office arrived on the scene, they found that the man near the ditch was dead.

"CID was called out along with crime scene," said Major Mark Wood of the Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office. "It's all under investigation at this time."

Investigators didn't immediately know who the man was or how he died.

"At this time, it's too early," said Major Wood.

Arnold says he never thought he would stumble upon something like this right in his front yard.

"I didn't know what to think," said Arnold. "It just blew my mind. It's crazy you know?

The case is still under investigation. A cause of death has not been determined yet.
