Like father, like son: Young Achiever with perfect attendance

PINEVILLE, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - A Tioga High School student will graduated in May with perfect attendance for all 12 years of school. His father has the same achievement.

"I've gone to Mary Goff, to Tioga Junior High, and up to Tioga High," began Tioga senior Walker Nation.

Walker has been in the Rapides Parish public school system his whole life, as in, he’s never missed a day of classes.

"I had to do it," Nation said. "It wasn't an option."

Lifelong perfect attendance isn't unheard of, but in this case, it runs in the family. Walker’s father, Shelby, never missed a day of school either.

"You just do what's expected of you," said Shelby Nation. "The school is there for you. You take the opportunity that's given to you. Make it work for you. And if you go everyday, you're going to get something out of it regardless."

Nation says it’s important to him to pass onto his son that appreciation for school and work ethic for later in life.

"And as school is your job at the time, you get into that habit of going everyday," Shelby Nation said. "Then get into the workforce, then you work You go everyday."

When Walker graduates in may, he’ll move onto the next phase of his life with a hard-earned diploma and what he calls, a good foundation from great parents.

"I thank them for it," said Walker. "I take pride in this now."

After a summer break, Walker plans to attend classes at LSUA and possibly pursue a degree in psychology. He says it may be even tougher, but he’s going to try to make it to every college class as well.
