Pineville Police enforce seat belt use

Posted: Updated:
PINEVILLE (KALB News Channel 5) -- The Pineville Police Department wants to remind motorists that they are cracking down on people who are not wearing seat belts.

The "Click It or Ticket" program will be amped up beginning May 1.

Police say, as Memorial Day nears, so do traffic accidents.

Most recent data shows, in 2012, more than 10,000 people who died in crashes weren't wearing seat belts.

So, to make sure that people are following the law, police will be stepping up enforcement.

"We have seen over the past couple of years an increase of people wearing seat belts," said Lt. Darrell Basco of the Pineville Police Department. "That's what we're trying to do. We want to change the behavior of people, get them to wear a seat belt for safety in wrecks."

The Pineville Police Department effort is part of a larger, national campaign.
