Community rallies for shooting victim Chelseé Martin

Posted: Updated:
ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - A couple of months ago, tragedy struck a family here in Cenla. Now, the community is rallying for recovery.

"Disbelief, shock," said Leslie Michiels, owner of Hot Shots in Alexandria. "It was a bad day: we didn't know if she was going to live."

"Just scared," said Crystal Luttgeharm, a coworker and friend. "Scared for what we were going to hear next."

"It was just so hard to see her defeated," another coworker Hannah Riser said. "But, she wasn't defeated for long. Not at all."

On March 6, 21-year-old Chelseé Martin was shot twice.

Chelseé survived but suffered. She lost the hearing in her right ear, and she'll need several surgeries to reconstruct her face, teeth, and nerves. That's why Hot Shots--where Chelseé worked--is hosting a barbecue fundraiser to help pay for her recovery.

"The community has really come out and shown a lot of support," Michiels said. "Even people who didn't know her."

"It fills my heart with joy," said Luttgeharm. "There's not many things that I can do for her, but the way we came together for this is just overwhelming."

"It's amazing," said Chelseé's grandmother Norma Sawyer. "I never thought that many people would come out of the woodwork."

Sawyer says, a dollar for Chelseé is also a dollar for her two-year-old son.

"He's amazing; he's a little Chelseé," said Sawyer. "They're helping her get back to 100 percent so that she can be there for him all the time."

It's a community coming together for the girl who loves her community.

"I raised her all her life," Sawyer said. "And we just love her more than anything in the world and want her to be better."

The fundraiser is Friday, May 2, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Hot Shots at 1205 England Drive in Alexandria. Barbecue plates are $8 with sides.
