Texas veterinarian's license suspended and arrested for animal cruelty

Posted: Updated:

FORT WORTH (CBS News) – CBS 11 News has learned that Dr. Millard “Lou” Tierce, of the Camp Bowie Animal Clinic, has been arrested for animal cruelty.

Tierce turned himself in to Fort Worth police and has been charged with Cruelty to Animal Non-Livestock. His license to practice veterinary medicine has also been suspended.

The long-time Fort Worth vet turned himself in to police around 7 p.m. Wednesday and was free, released from the Tarrant County Jail on $10,000 bail, by 8:15 p.m. Tierce left the jail with his wife and attorney.

Tierce and his clinic came under suspicion after a family claimed that he told them their dog had to be put down, when in fact they learned, months later, that the animal had been was secretly kept alive.

The owners of the 5-year-old Leonberger, named Sid,told authorities they gave permission for their dog to be euthanized back in October. The family said Tierce recommended euthanization because of the dog’s declining health. Then, last week the family received a call from a former employee who told them that Sid was not only alive but still at the clinic.

The employee allegedly told the family that Sid was being used for blood transfusions and other medical procedures.

“The betrayal is so incredibly intense that nothing you have prepares you for the emotions,” owner Marian Harris said. “There’s anger. There’s joy that you have your dog back. There’s betrayal of this intense trust.”

Officials with the Fort Worth Police Department confirm that the Texas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners, along with Fort Worth police and local animal control officers, began an investigation at the clinic on April 29.

Tierce, 71, has been a licensed veterinarian since 1966. The Camp Bowie Animal Clinic has a D rating with the Better Business Bureau and is not an accredited establishment.

Since the allegations were made public Tierce’s clinic, and others across North Texas, has been flooded with people inquiring as to the whereabouts of their believed-to-be deceased animals. Police are asking that anyone who thinks they may have been victimized by the Camp Bowie Animal Clinic to call 817-335-4222 and complete an offense report.
