RAPIDES PARISH, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - Thursday is the National Day of Prayer, an event established by Congress in 1952.

Residents came out to the steps of Pineville City Hall to pray together. Participants were invited to worship silently or call out their prayers for the group.
Then, Pineville city officials received a special moment of prayer from their constituents.

"People are very religious," said Mayor Clarence Fields. "And I tell you, as an elected official, I really appreciate the prayers that we get each and every day from all of our people. We don't just get it on the National Day of Prayer, but we get it all the time. We hear it all the time. We feel it all the time. And that's very important to us."

Hundreds of people turned out to the Alexandria Mall for another National Day of Prayer event.

The mall was filled with songs and prayers for our nation, its leaders, our military and more. The service was sponsored by Calvary Baptist Church, the Pentecostals of Alexandria and Zion Hill Church.

"We have come together united in heart and you can feel that unity and the Lord blessed it today, the unity of all denominations and our Rabbi it was just a great, great day," said Anthony Mangun of POA.
