Teenager dies after accidental shooting in Tioga

Posted: Updated:
TIOGA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) --  The Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office says a 17-year-old Tioga High School student has died after accidentally being shot Thursday afternoon.

Deputies say Tony Lawson and a friend were "mishandling" a rifle at a home on Oaklane Road when the friend shot him.

News Channel 5's Brooke Buford has the latest.

A terrible tragedy. The Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office says that's what happened Thursday afternoon when 17-year-old Tony Lawson and a friend were mishandling a rifle and a single bullet fired and hit him in the chest.

"I believe they did not know it was loaded," said Lt. Tommy Carnline of the Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office. "The firearm was discharged and the young man was hit."

Deputies tried to revive Lawson, but they say it was too late. The teen, a junior at Tioga High School, died.

"This is just a terrible tragedy," said Lt. Carnline. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family."

Deputies say the other teen who accidentally shot him will not be charged. The shooting has been ruled an accident.

The Rapides Parish School Board says counselors will be at the school for students and staff.

"It's always hard when you lose a young one - for the school system and definitely the family," said Clyde Washington, deputy assistant superintendent. "We extend our condolences to those individuals."

The sheriff's office says the most important lesson people can take away is to always double check to make sure a gun is not loaded.

"Every gun, we treat every firearm as if it is loaded," said Lt. Carnline. "We make sure and we double and triple check. A mishandled firearm is the most deadly available."

**UPDATE** Upon arrival, deputies located the victim, identified as Tony Lawson, 17 of Tioga, and started performing CPR until Alpine Volunteer Fire

Department and other medical personnel arrived. Acadian Ambulance arrived moments later and transported the victim to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Detectives and Crime Scene were on scene conducting the investigation and it appears this was an accidental shooting.

“The victim and some friends were mishandling a firearm that they presumed was unloaded an it discharged striking the victim once” said Sheriff William Earl Hilton. “This is a terrible tragedy and our thoughts and prayers go out to this young man’s family and friends”.
