Students, Dietitians Sour On School Food Requirements

Posted: Updated:

New school lunch requirements are proving not to be too popular with students or school nutrition directors. School leaders say the government standards, which are meant to make school meals healthier, are expensive and not popular with students.
Starting next school year, grains served at schools must be at least half whole grain. Food must be lower in sodium and schools must provide healthier snacks and more fruits and vegetables. While school nutrition directors agree they need to offer healthier meals, they say healthier alternatives typically cost more and many students are rejecting them.

They are asking congress and the Department of Agriculture to roll back some of the federal requirements.
