OLPS Hosts May Pole Celebration

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5)--Bright flowers and ribbons filled the air at Our Lady of Prompt Succor school Monday.  Fourth graders have been practicing for weeks for the may pole celebration.

The students dance with ribbons - to signify renewal and celebrate the spring season.  The tradition dates back to the middle ages when villagers would cut down a large tree, place it in the middle of town and decorate it with ribbons to welcome spring.

"The fourth graders contribution to honoring Mary is to perform this dance with the ribbons.  The girls wear the flowered wreaths on their heads and it's just a celebration of spring and new life and remembering Mary," Teacher Stacy Besselman said.

Third graders at OLPS will have their annual Louisiana Day today at noon.
