YWCA buys Turner Street YMCA

Posted: Updated:
ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - Just one month after shutting down, the YMCA on Turner Street has a new owner.

On March 31, the facility closed down because of lack of financial and membership support.

The YWCA closed on a deal to purchase the building and make it its newest branch on May 6th.

"It has been a complete whirlwind. This will be our second YWCA location. We are really excited for our community. This is great," said Katie Vanderlick, the executive director of the YWCA.

"We heard the community and understood that they wanted this building to reopen and the programs to run and we're excited that we're to do it. With the support of the community, the YWCA was able to do it."

Tuesday afternoon, the YWCA closed a roughly $100,000 deal to buy the shuttered YMCA.

The branch had hit some hard times and had to close at the end of March.

"It got to the point, especially after we had to close the Gamburg facility in November 2013, that we didn't have the revenue to match the expenses that were coming in every month,” said Al Quartemont, who is on the YMCA Board of Directors. “We did the best we could through the first three months of 2014 to try to raise the revenue, for whatever reason, we couldn't find that major donor to give us that ultimate push we needed to stay open."

That's where the YWCA stepped in.

Not only will they be renovating the building, they'll also be expanding on its programs.

"Not only are we going to offer those programs, but we are going to expand on them. We're going to make the community proud and we are really excited about this," said Vanderlick.

The YMCA board says it couldn’t think of anyone better at the helm than the YWCA.

"We knew it would take an organization that had a solid foundation. The YWCA has a good name and reputation, so people are more willing to donate," said Quartemont.

The Turner Street location will reopen June 1, 2014.
