17th Annual Law Enforcement Service announced for Friday

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - On Friday May 9, 2014, Sheriff William Earl Hilton and the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office will be hosting the Seventeenth Annual Law Enforcement Memorial Service starting at 10 a.m. on the steps in front of the Rapides Parish Courthouse.

In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week.

Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.

So far in 2014, as of this press release, 45 line of duty deaths have occurred in the United States, one of those in Louisiana.

There are 419 names of Law Enforcement Officers from Louisiana engraved on the wall at the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, D.C.

RPSO invites the public and the media to come and be a part of this memorial honoring our local Law Enforcement Officers who have paid the ultimate price.
