Kids become "Masters of Disaster" in prep class

Posted: Updated:
ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - The American Red Cross of Central Louisiana and the T.R.E.E. House are partnering to bring disaster preparedness education to children.

Oliver Deal was already a third grade student at Alma Redwine New Vision Academy, but now, he has another title too.

"I'm a master of disaster," said Oliver.

Oliver and dozens of other third, fourth and fifth graders from alma redwine became "masters of disaster" at a preparedness class hosted by T.R.E.E. House and the Red Cross.

"So that children can be an integral part of getting their families prepared," said Kara Edwards, museum manager at T.R.E.E. House and the instructor Tuesday.

The students learned how to deal in case of a fire, flood, hurricane, or other disaster, with kid-friendly tips like have a meeting spot, call 9-1-1, and get away from the danger.

"Make a plan... Make a kit... Be informed," the students chanted after Edwards.

The young participants even got to take home a starter disaster preparedness kit and instructions on how to add to it.

"Make a kit with all of those essentials for disaster preparedness," Edwards said. "Something they can grab and go if they have to evacuate in an emergency."

It's food, water, first aid supplies and more.

"You have all the stuff you need," Oliver said.

Teachers say it's a lesson not often taught in the classroom - or at home - until now.

"I think that most of them will get home very excited and say, 'We need to sit down and talk about this: we need a meeting place, and look at this neat stuff that I got today,'" said Alma Redwine teacher Sarah Lester.

So that Oliver Deal and his classmates will know how to stay safe when disaster strikes.

"I would get the kit and go," said Oliver.

T.R.E.E. House will be hosting another kids' preparedness class Saturday, May 10 at 10 a.m. That event is free and open to the public.
