ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) Cenla residents can participate in the Nation’s largest one-day food drive by just leaving food next to their mailbox.

According to the Central Louisiana Food Bank, 49 million Americans – 1 in 6 – are unsure where their next meal is coming from. That's why the Food Bank and local letter carriers will work together with the community to "Stamp Out Hunger" on May 10.

Members of The Food Bank said Cenla residents can leave a sturdy bag with non-perishable foods next to their mailbox before the time of regular mail delivery on Saturday. Local letter carriers will collect the donations as they deliver the mail and take them to the Food Bank.

“The timing of this food drive is critical to the Food Bank of Central Louisiana,” said Jayne Wright-Velez, executive director of the Food Bank. “During the spring and summer, we see a decrease in food donations while the number of people we serve each month continues to increase.”

The Stamp Out Hunger effort is in its 22nd year. In 2013, drive organizers across the country collected more than 74 million pounds of food donations. C
entral Louisiana collected more than 34,000 lbs.
