Woman found guilty of scalding son's legs

LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) - A state judge in Lake Charles has found a woman guilty of dipping her 2-year-old foster son in scalding water.

On Wednesday, Judge Ron Ware convicted 29-year-old Lan Huyhl Le of second-degree cruelty to a juvenile, bringing to an end the six-day trial. Le had requested a bench trial, putting the decision in Ware's hands.

Prosecutors say the boy had third-degree burns that rose 5½ to 6 inches up both legs and required skin grafts.

Ware set sentencing for Sept. 10, but allowed Le to remain free on bond until then. He ordered her to surrender her passport.

Defense attorney Cliff Newman said he is considering filing a motion for reconsideration of guilt and appealing the verdict. He said he was shocked by Ware's decision.
