Fort Polk Progress congratulates VPSD Middle School Student of the Year

LEESVILLE, La. (KALB News Channel 5) --Fort Polk Progress, as part of its ongoing Education Initiative, recognizes Bethany Kay, an eighth grader at Evans High School, as the 2014 Middle School Student of the Year in Vernon Parish.

Fifteen-year-old Bethany Kay is on a relentless mission. Currently she has a 4.0 grade point average and is in constant pursuit of excellence.

"I am motivated internally," Kay said. "I know I have to get things done."

Bethany is the daughter of Vernon Parish Schools Director of Secondary Curriculum, Michael Kay and Evans High School Librarian, Tammy Kay who both were educated in the district.

Her favorite subject in school is mathematics because she enjoys the discipline and the rules associated with the subject. "There are certain steps you have to take and nothing changes," she explained.

Besides having a perfect grade point average, she is also involved in many activities, including girls' softball and 4-H. She's been involved in softball since the fifth grade and is now the catcher on the varsity team. Bethany is currently the president of the 4-H Club and vice president of Wellness Week, during which she helped to organize a campaign among her peers, called "Kick-Butt Day," to stop the use of tobacco products.

Although she has four more years before graduating from Evans, Bethany has already made plans for her future. She wants to attend Louisiana State University and from there go to medical school. She intends to become a pediatrician and practice in Vernon Parish.

"I love my pediatrician in Alexandria," she explained. "I like kids and I want to open a pediatric clinic in Leesville."

Bethany's philosophy about school and life is rather straightforward: "I believe that when you know the right things to do, you follow through."
