ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) -- The post office and the Food Bank of Central Louisiana teamed up Saturday to "Stamp Out Hunger."

Residents could place a brown paper bag stuffed with non-perishable foods like canned soup, pasta and cereal by their mailbox. And, as postal workers delivered mail, they picked up the food to deliver to the food bank.

"Stamp Out Hunger" is a nationwide event that helps the increasing number of Americans struggling with hunger.

The post office says it collected so much food that some workers started to run out of room in their mail trucks.

"The program is very popular," said Al Mathews, a mailman. "Right now just about on every street we're getting 50-60% participation. I'm looking right at the four houses in front of me and there's three house with food by them. So, that's a real good percentage right there."
The food will be delivered to the Food Bank of Central Louisiana on Monday to be counted and sorted for distribution.
