ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) -- It's one of Alexandria's biggest events of the year. News Channel 5's Steven Maxwell takes us down to the Red for the Alex River Fete.

It's a celebration on the banks of the Red River in downtown Alexandria.
"It is good for Alexandria to start putting events down here," Brittney Ducote of Alexandria.

It's the 2nd annual Alex River Fete - a time of weekend fun for the entire family.
"I am actually enjoying it a lot," said Ducote. "The band is great, the food is good and the booths are great."

The Fete features live music, plenty of food and the art walk with vendors set up down the streets.

"I just think there are so many different things that are good for the community," said Jeanne Rivers of Funky Fleur De Lis. "It is a lot of fun for the kids to come out."

This is Rivers' first year at the Alex River Fete and she says she's having a lot of fun.
"There is so many different things to do," she said. "You can bring your children out and then later on there might be something great for adults to hangout with the bands."

Fete isn't only about fun...it's also about a little friendly competition. At the barbecue cook-off, contestants cooked ribs, pork shoulders and much more.
"We talk to the other teams, we harass the teams," said Booker Booze of M&M Meats. "We even tell them at times to turn in their meats. It's not bad blood, it is all in fun."
The event was put on by the City of Alexandria's division of community services.
