ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) -- The Food Bank of Central Louisiana says it collected more than 50,000 pounds of food over the weekend in a joint program with the post office.

Residents could place paper bags stuffed with non-perishable food at their mailbox to be collected by their mail carrier.

It was part of the "Stamp Out Hunger" program aimed at eliminating hunger in the United States.

Some mail carriers say they collected so many bags that their mail trucks ran out of room.

"This makes a great impact for what we do," said Linda Hutson of the Food Bank. "This time of year, a lot of food donations slow down during the spring and summer months. For a weekend in May, a one day food drive for us to collect more than 30,000 lbs of food, it makes a great impact for us and the clients we serve."

The Food Bank says they started placing brown paper bags at mailboxes a few years ago to help remind people to donate.
