Students learn at "Pow Wow" celebration

Posted: Updated:
MARKSVILLE, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - Native American culture is being presented to students this week on the Tunica-Biloxi reservation as part of the 19th Annual Tunica-Biloxi and Paragon Casino Resort Pow Wow.

The program gives students an opportunity to learn firsthand about those cultures from native people, by watching performances of traditional dances and storytelling.

"It's a way for us to have a little bit more hands on, a more intimate setting we can explain different types of dances and the regalia that our dancers wear," said John Barbry, Pow Wow chairman. "And it's a more intimate function. Our children feel more relaxed and ask questions and we're able to share things with them."

The Pow Wow opens to the public at 5 p.m. Friday and wraps up Sunday at 4 p.m.
