Ball police chief calls for officer to be terminated

Posted: Updated:
BALL, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - For the second time in a month, Ball Chief of Police Melvin Williams is trying to fire officer Nathaniel Ussery.

The town council has called for a meeting Monday at 2 p.m. Currently, the council agenda calls for it to be a closed-door meeting, but News Channel 5 has been told that it could become a public meeting.

News Channel 5 confirmed this meeting with Chief Williams but he would not say what Ussery is being charged with.

On April 14, Chief Williams failed at his first attempt to try to fire the officer. The chief said, at that time, that Ussery accessed personal information about him using an internal system.

But, the council found that the chief did not conduct the investigation the correct way and the charges were dropped.

Ussery's attorney called the investigation "politically motivated" because he announced that he plans to run against Williams to become the next chief.
News Channel 5 will be at the meeting Monday afternoon and have the latest that night.
