Glenmora grad gets surprise with diploma

Posted: Updated:
GLENMORA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - It's a moment to remember for any student: crossing the stage to receive your high school diploma from the principal. But it wasn't the principal who handed Collin Whisenant his degree; it was his brother William on leave from the Navy nuclear engineering school.

"I was surprised," said Collin. "I didn't know he was going to be here. I saw him come out, and I was shocked."

Collin wasn't expecting william to make it to his graduation because William didn't have scheduled leave.

"I switched my leave to this date because I've missed a lot of my brother's senior year being in the military," said William. "I've missed a lot of my family growing up. It's just one those things that I'm glad my higher-up saw it as important thing for me to go and see my family and see this important day for my brother."

And as Collin joins William in the post-high school world, the brothers say, they'll have no trouble staying close.

"Well we're 15 months apart," Collin said. "So we've been a little bit close ever since - even though we fought - we kind of got close as we grew up."

"It's been a struggle like it is for anyone in the military," William said. "But I'm just glad that with modern technology, it's easier nowadays for us to stay close as a family."

So now it's time to celebrate, a milestone and a family reunited.

"I think we were planning on crawfish," said Collin.

And fine Cajun cuisine.

"I miss good Louisiana food though," William said.
