Grayson man arrested for timber theft

Baton Rouge, La., (KALB News Channel 5) - A Grayson man is accused of stealing timber in Caldwell Parish. Charles Mason Adkins, 37, was arrested Monday by Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF) enforcement agents.

Adkins was booked into the Caldwell Parish jail and charged with one count of timber theft valued at more than $13,000.

Investigators said Adkins was legally logging for a Grayson landowner between December 2013 and January 2014. During this time, Adkins reportedly paid for 33 loads of timber. The landowner became suspicious when he received much less money than was promised. Investigators found 11 additional loads of timber at three different mills.

“It was discovered that most of the timber found at these facilities had the landowner’s name on them. These loads were never listed on the paperwork submitted to the landowner,” said LDAF Commissioner Mike Strain, D.V.M.

The value of this timber was $13,158.73. Adkins was released after posting a $6,000 bond.
