Pursuit Ends in Suicide on Highway 112

(KALB News Channel 5) - At approximately 5 p.m. yesterday, Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office was advised of vehicle pursuit initiated by Woodworth Police Department in reference to a hit and run accident being investigated by the Alexandria Police Department that occurred in the South Circle.

Deputies assisted in the pursuit which lead from US 165 to La Hwy 112.

The suspect finally stopped at a church on Hwy 112 and before deputies and Woodworth Officers could make contact, the suspect exited the vehicle, produced a handgun and shot himself sustaining a gunshot wound to the head.

Officers, deputies and First Responders rendered medical attention until Acadian Air Med arrived. The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Sheriff's Detectives and Crime Scene arrived and are conducting the investigation.

The suspect was identified as Christopher Washington, 20 years of age of New Orleans, Louisiana.

Deputies learned later the suspect was also wanted in connection with an armed robbery in Grand Prairie, Texas.

The vehicle, a black 2003 Mitsubishi Gallant, was also reported stolen. "This is a tragedy and our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

This is an perfect example of how a traffic stop can turn into a lethal incident in a very short time” said Sheriff William Earl Hilton. “I am very thankful no officers were injured in this incident". Sheriff's Detectives say the investigation is ongoing and autopsy results are pending. The Louisiana State Police also assisted in this pursuit.
