Elderly Shreveport man arrested, accused of stabbing woman

Posted: Updated:

SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) - A woman is in the hospital after she was stabbed at a home in South Shreveport, allegedly by an elderly man she was caring for.

KSLA-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1pgpDuA ) police said the victim was stabbed multiple times Tuesday. A man, identified by his family as 75-year-old Walter Smith, was arrested.

Cpl. Marcus Hines says it appears the victim was his caretaker.

Both victim and suspect were taken to University Health Shreveport. Hines says the victim is in stable condition, but her injuries are considered serious.

Smith was taken there as a precaution because he has pre-existing medical concerns.

The suspect's niece, Deborah Coleman, says he told her after the stabbing that he "flipped out."

Coleman believes the victim has been Smith's caretaker for the past six months.
