Red Cross Hurricane Kit

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5)--Before a storm threatens you and your family should have supplies on-hand to help you weather the storm. News Channel Five's Lydia Magallanes takes a look at how to put together a storm disaster kit.

"We often use the analogy you don't build the fire truck on the way to the fire," David Melancon of the Cenla Red Cross said.

In order to be prepared for when disaster strikes, the time is now to assemble a hurricane preparedness kit.

"I think the ice storms we experienced early this winter were a good example of why it's very important to be ready in advance if some sort of occurrence takes place you often times don't have time to react you gotta get ready and you've got to be prepared in advance," Red Cross worker Mary McMinn said.

Items on the list include a three-day supply of food and water, pet supplies, a flash light, batteries, a battery-powered radio, medications, deodorant, cash, a lighter, a first and kit

"Get something that you can grab and I always tell people put it in the closet closest to the door we never want to have to go back in the deep of the house for no disaster when it's time to go you need to be up and running," Red Cross worker Rosie Murphy said.

Besides packing the essentials like food, water and medicine, don't forget those important documents in your preparedness kit insurance papers birth certificates make sure to put those in a ziplock bag so that they're ready to go when you are. Definitely want to have your insurance information and relevant contacts ready to go you might even want to go so far as your banking information just anything that would be very important in the event that something should happen.

Natural disasters cant be postponed, so its best to be ready before a storm...

"I always say if you fail to prepare you're preparing to fail," Murphy said.
