ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5)-- History was made in Alexandria this weekend with the first ever LGBT pride festival.

The Cenla Pride Festival was held at the downtown amphitheater.  Those who organized the event call it a celebration of diversity in the community. The festival promoted acceptance for lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender members of the community.

Live music, food and booths promoting healthy living were set up on the levee.  The event was sponsored by Central Louisiana Aids Support Services.

"Celebrating diversity for the members of the community," said Michael Parham, Event Coordinator. "Getting everyone out coming together. It is a chance for us to come together as a community, start working together. Build a make connections with other members of the community that we have not been able to, because of stigma and prejudice. We are just overlooking that and coming together to have a good time."

Organizers say they hope to make Cenla Pride an annual event.
