Casey Kasem's daughter explains end-of-life decision for her father

Posted: Updated:

(CBS News) - Casey Kasem's daughter is explaining why she's moving forward with end-of-life measures for her father after a judge ruled Wednesday that she can withhold food, fluids and medication from the ailing radio personality.

On her Facebook page, Kerri Kasem said the judge's decision goes along with her father's wishes and that the goal is to keep the 82-year-old from suffering more pain.

"For people who do not understand the natural dying process: Giving food and water to a dying body creates pain and further suffering. The body does not want or require food or water anymore in the dying process," she wrote. "My father can no longer digest foods and fluids fill his lungs up and will suffocate him. My Dad IS on pain meds."

She added that the court's decision "upheld our father's explicit wishes as expressed by him in his health directive."

The ruling is part of a dispute between Kerri and her stepmother, Jean Kasem, over her father's care. Jean reportedly stormed out of the courtroom after Wednesday's decision was announced.

Kerri Kasem also said family has gathered around her father in recent days.

"Transitioning our father's treatment to comfort-oriented care was one of the hardest decisions we've ever had to make. For the last 11 days, our father has been surrounded day and night by love and care by his daughters Kerri and Julie, his son Mike, his brother Mouner and sister-in-law Mary, and his dear friend Gonzalo Venecia," she wrote.

She added, "We continue to hope that Jean and [her daughter] Liberty will come join his family during this time."

Casey Kasem suffers from a form of Lewy body dementia, which has symptoms similar to Alzheimer's disease. He is best known as the long-running host of several countdown radio programs like "American Top 40" and as the voice of Shaggy in the "Scooby-Doo" franchise.
