Medicare Medication Program

Posted: Updated:
NEW ORLEANS, La. (KALB News Channel 5) -- Are you on Medicare? Here is something new- you could be eligible for free doctor visits and exams, as well as prescription medications.

"Mammograms, colonoscopies, all of these things are free. No out of pocket expenses, and, remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of a cure."

Some senior citizens may qualify for programs that help with medical and prescription drug cost without realizing it. The New Orleans Council on Aging is trying to spread the word.

The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, or CMS, has discovered that there are actually thousands and thousands of people across the United States, particularly in Louisiana, who appear to be eligible for these services, but they are not receiving them.

The two programs are for people on Medicare, those 65 and older or those who are 21 or older and disabled. Seniors who qualify by age and income could get the cost of Medicare Part B for treatment reimbursed each month, or qualify for no out of pocket costs on prescriptions in Medicare Part D. Some could even qualify for both.

In New Orleans Parish, there are a lot of people who already know about this program, but they are trying to get the word out to all that are eligible and informing them that this program is available.

To qualify, you must submit an application. To see if you qualify for these services, call 504-827-7843.
