High-Protein Foods Mean Higher Prices

Posted: Updated:
(NBC)  The price of protein based foods is going up.

The Bloomberg protein index tracks the prices of beef, beans, bacon and nine other protein sources. The index found the price of high protein foods has jumped 28 percent in the last five years including a 5-percent increase this year alone.  That's twice as fast as the gain for all food prices.

A spreading pork virus, drought and export demand are blamed for rising protein prices.
