Are You Addicted To Tanning? It's Possible

Posted: Updated:
(NBC) A new study suggests it is possible to be addicted to tanning.

Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital exposed mice to a daily dose of u-v radiation for six weeks. After a week of exposure researchers found elevated endorphin levels in the mice.  Those are "feel-good" hormones that have an impact similar to heroin -- and the levels in mice after one week were high enough to blunt their sensation of pain.

When the trial ended the mice were given a drug to block the feel-good hormones,  and they experienced symptoms of withdrawal and would not return to the areas where they had been given the drug.
