Steubenville South returns to Alexandria

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) -- Steubenville South, the yearly Catholic conference, is back in Cenla this weekend.

News Channel 5's Mark Klein stopped by as they celebrate their 20th year.

The Alexandria Riverfront Center is flooding. But, not with water - with people.

Thousands of students from groups across the country are here for this year's Steubenville South convention in Alexandria.

"The whole purpose is to have a conference to outreach young men and women," said Fr. Jose Robles Sanchez of the Diocese of Alexandria.

"It's a good experience to grow in my faith and be with others who are doing the same thing," said Paulina Kardoush of Sugarland, Tx.

This is Paulina's first time at the conference.

"A lot of the talks have been very relatable and they keep our attention," she said. "We learn a lot from it."

This is the 20th anniversary of Steubenville South, which was the first Franciscan conference outside of Steubenville, Ohio. It all goes back to 1995 in the Menard High School gym.

It moved to the Coliseum and finally made it's home in the Riverfront Center in 2013.

And, according to Fr. Jose, while the message has always stayed the same, the method of delivery has changed with the times.

"I make sure that I put Christ in their media, in their iPhones, Samsungs, whatever they have," he said. "If we don't do that, we're wasting our time because we have to connect to these young people."

In addition, every keynote session at the conference is also broadcast as a live stream online.
