Ball mayor officially vetoes chief pay raise

Posted: Updated:
BALL, La. (KALB News Channel 5) -- Mayor of Ball Jonathan Dean says he submitted a veto Monday to a pay raise just granted to Chief of Police Melvin Williams.

Last week, the town council voted to increase Chief Williams' pay by $200 a month.

Dean says he doesn't believe the chief should qualify for a raise while he's being investigated by the attorney general's office for sexual harassment of a fellow male Ball police officer.

He says, however, that he expects his veto to be overridden by the town council.

"I do think they will override the veto," said Mayor Dean. "It is to show the public where I am on the record as far as this issue is concerned."

No word yet on if or when the council will attempt that override.
