NSU student-athletes win third straight contest supporting St. Jude Children's Hospital

NATCHITOCHES, La. (KALB News Channel 5) – It’s a “three-peat” for the Northwestern State Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, which Monday was announced as the 2014 winner of the Southland Conference “Pop Tab Drive” contest supporting the Ronald McDonald House at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis.

With the help of other student organizations on campus, Northwestern State’s SAAC, comprised of student representatives of each of the 14 NCAA Division I sports teams at NSU, collected a record total 814 pounds of tabs.

The total earned Northwestern State the Southland Conference “Pop Tab Drive” championship for the third consecutive year with the Demons collecting more than all the other participating league members.

The entire Northwestern State campus, including SAAC, Greek Life, Student Activities and other on-campus organizations, contributed to the drive.

The pop tabs come from soft drink cans, which will be turned over for recycling and the money will go to St. Jude’s. The 2014 total was more than 500 pounds than the previous record of 297.6 pounds set by Northwestern during the 2011-12 academic year.

The “Pop Tab Drive” is one of several community service projects Northwestern  student-athletes undertake to help the Natchitoches community. The student-athletes also take part in activities that support organizations such as Samaritan’s Feet, Operation Support Our Troops, American Cancer Society, Special Olympics, Cane River Children’s Home and many other local community groups.

Sam Houston State finished behind NSU for the third consecutive year, collecting 313.5 pounds of pop tabs. McNeese State finished third with 235.1 pounds followed by Central Arkansas (172.8) and Lamar (100.4) as the only Southland schools to collect more than 100 pounds. As a conference, 1,731.6 pounds of pull tabs were collected for the Ronald McDonald House.
