71 NSU Student Athletes Earn Southland Academic Honors

 NATCHITOCHES – When the Southland Conference Commissioner’s Spring Honor Roll was announced Tuesday, 71 Northwestern State student-athletes whose teams competed last semester earned recognition, including 17 who posted perfect 4.0 grade point averages while in the midst of their seasons.

Athletes in basketball, baseball, softball, women’s tennis and track and field at NSU were included on the list if they posted at least a 3.0 GPA in the spring 2014 semester.

There were 17 Demon baseball players earning inclusion on the Commissioner’s Honor Roll, including two, Edwin Gomez and Sam Wilson, who had 4.0 averages. The list included Chase Daughdrill, the Demons’ first-team All-Southland and All-Louisiana third baseman.

Sixteen members of the Lady Demon softball team that made a second straight NCAA Tournament appearance were qualifiers for the honor roll, including first-team All-Southland third baseman Brittany Virgoe, who was one of five softball players with 4.0 GPAs. Others posting perfect grades for the spring semester were All-Southland Tournament selection Shenequia Abby, Kayla Boening, Amanda Fulkerson and Tashana Triplett.

Nine players earned Southland academic recognition from the Lady Demon basketball team that won 21 games and reached the NCAA Tournament. Four had perfect 4.0 GPAs:  Beatrice Attura, Meredith Graf, Chelsea Rogers and Amy Staha.

Nine NSU men’s basketball players were listed on the honor roll, including Southland Freshman of the Year Zeek Woodley. Three Demon hoopsters had 4.0 averages, Sabri Thompson and twins Austin and Dustin Adams.

Seven Lady Demon tennis competitors made the Southland honor roll, two with perfect 4.0 GPAs, sophomores Natalya Krutova and Daniela Simonova.

Among the seven Lady Demon track and field student-athletes with 3.0 averages were two senior school record-holders, Quiana Griffin and Consuela Lindsay, along with freshman Mawi Berkhadley, who had a perfect 4.0 this spring. Also on the list was the women’s Southland Conference Steve McCarty Citizenship Award recipient Amy Williams.

Six Demon track and field competitors picked up Southland academic honors, including Quinton Helaire, the high jumper who won the men’s  Southland’s Steve McCarty Citizenship Award last month.
