Alexandria wins first place in Cleanest City Contest

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - The City of Alexandria has been awarded first place in the state in its division in the Louisiana Garden Club Federation, Inc. Cleanest City Contest. Jean Gilstrap, Louisiana Garden Club Federation State Cleanest City Contest chairman; Sherrell Bozeman, president Alexandria Garden Club; and Yvette Herbert, state president of the Louisiana Garden Club Federation, presented Mayor Jacques M. Roy and the City of Alexandria with a plaque to mark the city’s statewide first place award in its division in the LGCF’s 2014 Cleanest City Contest.

“This is a great recognition,” Mayor Roy said. “I want to thank all the people at public works and volunteers who help to make this happen. It takes lots of hard work and is a constant task to keep the city clean.

“I also think this helps to galvanize people when they know that their hard work is being recognized. I also want to recognize Pineville and Mayor Clarence Fields, our neighbors across the river for consistently winning this award as they did again this year as well. They do a great job over there and it is a point of pride for them to win as it is for us, too.” Alexandria officials were notified of the win last month by the LGCF.

The primary goal of the Cleanest City Contest is to become a litter free Louisiana. The contest hopes to help accomplish this goal by bringing cities together with a common objective – to clean their communities, according to the LGCF.
