Bunkie Baseball Field Facelift

Posted: Updated:
BUNKIE, La. (KALB News Channel 5) The city of Bunkie has been awarded a $25,000 grant from State Farm, to improve their local baseball field.

“It’s time for the John Guillory field to look like a first class ball park!” said State Farm Representative Kyle Wolff.

I't's no secret -- according to Bunkie residents, the John Guillory Field has been in need of a facelift. Co-commissioner for Bunkie Little League Doug McCoy says "we need field improvements, drainage improvements, bleacher improvements, concession improvements".

Now State Farm is making this field of dreams a reality, thanks to a $25,000 dollar grant from their Neighborhood Assist Competition.

Baseball parent Amy Sonnier says, "we found out about it, we hurried up, and ya know, it was really a team effort. We put our heads together and the baseball field just really needed some improvement".

More than 4,000 neighborhoods entered the contest, and after national voting on Facebook, Bunkie landed at number 12!

"Bunkie is my hometown and this is a great opportunity for state farm and us to give a tremendous contribution back to our local little league program," said Wolff.

The $25,000 grant not only helps the kids who play in this park, but it's also a home run for the entire community. "I think the community coming together and earning this check together will escalate the program to become what it used to be," said parent and Co-commissioner of Bunkie Little League, Dee Dee McCoy. "Coming together as a team, donating labor, and use of equipment, we’re gonna be able to go a lot further. This is kind of our start and its so awesome," says Sonnier.

The work is expected to be finished by April 2015, just in time for Spring ball. Amy says, "it’s gonna be great to just get the ball rolling, get some of those things done that we've wanted to do, we just haven’t had the funds to do it".

Little leaguer Jude Newton says, "its just gonna give us some motivation to play better"!

In coordination with the Avoyelles American Little League, work in the field will begin later this summer.
