McAllister changes course, will seek re-election

Posted: Updated:
BATON ROUGE, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - Republican U.S. Rep. Vance McAllister has changed his mind and says he intends to run for re-election despite the scandal caused by a video showing him kissing a married female aide.

In April, the freshman congressman said he wouldn't seek another term. But on Monday, McAllister said he intends to be on the Nov. 4 ballot as a candidate for Louisiana's 5th District.

McAllister made the announcement on "The Moon Griffon Show," a conservative talk radio show based in north Louisiana.

The married congressman, who ran on a platform of faith and family, apologized for a "personal failure" after the security tape showed him kissing an aide in his congressional office. She later resigned.

GOP leaders have pushed for McAllister to resign, but he has refused.
McAllister said, "Today, after consulting with my wife and family, I have made a decision to run for re-election for the 5th Congressional District. Without a doubt this decision comes after much thought and prayer. This district has been home to me and my family all of my life. I know the needs of this congressional district very well. I also know that this district needs a strong, conservative voice in congress. I plan to continue to stand up for our veterans, bring common sense solutions to our nation's problems and most importantly I will fight to get our fiscal house back in order."

Statement from Dr. Ralph Abraham on Congressman McAllister's decision to run for re-election:

"It's not my place to judge our current Congressman or to publicly criticize the ordeal he has gone through. I'm sure it was difficult for him and his family, and I hope they are continuing to heal.  Once he was elected, I wanted nothing more than to see him succeed."

"Regardless of whether he has changed his mind on seeking re-election, I am going to stay in the race. My campaign is not going to be about the challenges our Member of Congress has faced. My campaign is going to be about the future, and about who can best represent the people of LA's 5th Congressional District."

Statement from Clay Grant, Libertarian Candidate for Congress (Dist. 5)

Ultimately it is McAllister's choice to seek re-election. I'm sure he has received a lot of support from his constituents over the past few months. There have also been numerous polls that show continuous support if he was to jump back in the race. The latest poll was between McAllister and Riser with McAllister holding 26.1 percent and Riser just below that. I personally believe that it is up to the people of Dist. 5 to go through the vetting process to make sure the candidate of their choice, truly represents their political values.

As a voter and a citizen of Dist. 5, it is imperative that we seek true Constitutionalist, and someone who will best represent the people of this District. We no longer need establishment type candidates, we don't need our elected officials to follow the status quo. We need a true representative, someone who is willing to stand against the establishment and focus on getting this nation out of debt, out of needless wars, out of spying on American citizens, and out of the business of forcing policies on the American people. More Freedom, Less Government!
