SLIDELL, La. (AP) - Two Gulfport, Mississippi, women were arrested after police said they left a pit bull puppy inside their hot, parked vehicle while they shopped at a mall in Slidell, Louisiana.
A Slidell Police news release said the puppy was near death when officers arrived Sunday in response to an emergency call. Police used a tool to get into the locked vehicle and rescue the puppy, which was turned over to Slidell Animal Control. The police department said the pup was recovering well Monday.
Police said 23-yar-old Lajessica McKenzie and 20-year-old Carleisha Shelly arrived at the vehicle about 30 minutes after the puppy was removed. Each was booked with simple cruelty to animals, a misdemeanor. Each was released on $500 bond.
It was not immediately known if either woman had an attorney.
