Lab Chimps Now Safe In A Haven Near Shreveport

Posted: Updated:
(AP) The national sanctuary for chimpanzees retired from federal research says all 110 chimps that had been at a laboratory in New Iberia are now in its care at Chimp Haven in northwest Louisiana.

The sanctuary's President and CEO, Cathy Willis Spraetz, said Wednesday that the last group of about 20 arrived June 18. She says she waited to announce their arrival until they all were out of quarantine.

Kathleen Conlee of the Humane Society of the United States calls it "a precious moment to celebrate."  She says she's looking forward to more as the National Institutes of Health carries out its plan to retire hundreds more chimps to sanctuary.

Spraetz says Chimp Haven now has 212 chimpanzees in 20 groups.
