PITKIN, La. (KALB News Channel 5) (**UPDATE Monday, July 7, 2014 at 4 p.m.) -- The Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office says a Pitkin man shot and killed his mother over the holiday weekend.

It happened on Freedom Road at a property where both the suspect and victim lived.

News Channel 5's Brooke Buford has more.

52-year-old Rodney Thompson is behind bars tonight, being held without bail, for the alleged murder of his mother, 74-year-old Gennieve Ashworth.

Deputies say the man shot and killed her. But, they're still trying to piece together why.

"The investigation is still ongoing," said Lt. Tommy Carnline, with RPSO. "We wouldn't want to speculate on any kind of motive or reason at this time. We have no clue."

The sheriff's department said the shooting happened around 5 a.m. Saturday, July 5 at Ashworth's home.

Thompson's house is directly behind his mother's.

Deputies say Thompson drove to the Oakdale Police Department to report the shooting. That's when RPSO deputies took over the case.

"Our deputies responded to the residence and had to force entry into the residence, as the door was locked," said Lt. Carnline. "We discovered a female suffering from a gunshot wound."

Ashworth was taken to the hospital and Thompson was charged originally with attempted 1st degree murder.

"When she died, that's when we upgraded our charges to first degree murder," said Lt. Carnline.

News Channel 5 reached out to family members of the suspect and victim. They chose not to comment.
