Weekend Surgery May Be Dangerous To Your Child's Health

(NBC) Children who undergo emergency -- but routine -- surgeries on weekends may be at greater risk of complications, and even death.

A study reviewing 22 years of surgical records, found kids who had weekend operations were 63-percent more likely to die than those treated during the week although the actual number of deaths was very low. Weekend patients were also 40-percent more likely to develop complications.

Decreased staffing, slower response times and limited access to lab tests may to blame for this 'weekend effect'.
