PINEVILLE, La. (KALB News Channel 5) (**UPDATE Tuesday, July 8, 2014**) -- Pineville Police are asking for your help in identifying a suspect who beat and robbed a woman Monday in the Walmart parking lot.

Police say the attack happened in broad daylight. And, they believe the attack is similar to other purse snatchings that have happened around the area and state.

Now, police say they're working with Walmart to find the man responsible and are issuing a warning to shoppers to keep their eyes open.News Channel 5's Brooke Buford has more.

"It scares me to death," said Anita Ryland, a shopper. "It makes me want to turn around and leave, honestly."

"I find that actually kind of odd," said Randy Wenzel, another customer.

Pineville Walmart shoppers say they're watching their surroundings a little closer after word that a woman was beat and robbed in the parking lot early Monday afternoon.

"I expect that kind of stuff to happen in Alexandria, but not in Pineville," said Ryland.

Pineville Police say the victim told them that as she was loading her merchandise into the back of her car, someone approached her from behind, hit her on the head, knocked her unconscious, and then stole her purse. Police believe a black man with a dark colored shirt driving a silver Cheverlot Equinox is responsible for the crime.

"It's actually pretty rare in Pineville," said Lt. Darrell Basco with the Pineville Police Department. "We haven't had a purse snatching in about three years in the city, especially in broad daylight with people in the parking lot coming in and out at that time of day. It's pretty rare."

Police say, no matter what time you're heading to the store, it's always important to be aware of your surroundings.

"Make sure your attention is where you are going to," said Lt. Basco. "Be aware of the people around you. If anyone looks suspicious or you feel uncomfortable, turn around and go back in the store and notify their security or pick up your cellphone."

The victim's family told us that she has a broken jaw and is currently in the hospital, but is expected to recover.

Pineville Police say they believe this purse snatching could be related to another purse snatching at the Alexandria Walmart on Coliseum Boulevard and the Monroe Walmart on Tuesday.

We tried to get in touch with the Alexandria Police Department for an interview about the stolen purse, but they said they would not be commenting.
