School uniforms Pros & Cons

ALEXANDRIA, LA (KALB News Channel 5) - The school year is just a month away, and for parents in Rapides Parish, it's time to buy uniforms. But how do parents really feel about them?“It’s really high… but hey, we’ve got to buy them!”, said father of four Alex Isaac.“It keeps them in check, keeps them in line, because if they have a uniform, you know they’re supposed to be in school, they can’t sneak around like we did when we were young".

Former Assistant Principal Bertha Hamilton echoes those feelings. She's been selling school uniforms at her boutique ever since Rapides Parish started using them. As a former educator, she sees them as a positive.

“They don’t have to worry about a child degrading another child and bullying a child because they are identified with the same pants, said Hamilton. “We can identify them if they are in the wrong place, and shouldn’t be there, it does help with discipline".

But not everyone in the Parish shares those same feelings.

“It's not just that they're expensive, who wants to wear them? the kids would be more comfortable in a pair of jeans," said mom Connie Price.

"You have to buy the uniform clothes, and then you still have to buy the regular street clothes, so it's just like an added expensive that should be there, " said  Latrice, a mother of two.

Price agrees, "they could give them a dress code but not make them buy certain things".

Bertha Hamilton says her boutique is a nice alternative to the department stores, and people come to her from across central Louisiana.

"I get people coming from Woodworth, Oakdale, Jena and Natchitoches, because of my prices! I just think its very very good for the parish, every child is in the same uniform".
