VERNON PARISH, La. (KALB News Channel 5)-- Sheriff Sam Craft of the Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office announces the July 10, 2014 arrest of Melodie Lowens, age 21, of Leesville.

The Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office received a complaint from a family member of an 81 year old female who resides in a local residential care facility. The family member indicated that the elderly female’s checking account showed $ 688.95 in fraudulent debit card charges.

Detectives with the Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office issued subpoenas in relation to the matter and were able to confirm that Melodie Lowens utilized the victim’s debit card to pay two utility bills, pay other personal bills, and conduct fast food purchases. Detectives also learned that Lowens was employed by the residential facility in which the victim resides. Detectives immediately contacted the director of the residential care facility.

The director of the facility assisted in the investigation and indicated that the facility has a zero tolerance policy regarding this type of employee conduct. Detectives made contact with Lowens at her residence and took her into custody.

Melodie Lowens was arrested and booked into the Vernon Parish Jail on one count of Exploitation of the Infirmed and one count of Identity Theft. Bond was set at $ 7000 and Lowens remains in the Vernon Parish Jail at the time of this release.
