MEDFORD, OR, July 19, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Diabetes and uncontrolled blood sugar levels affects more than a person's current health state -- the condition can lead to long-term eye damage. Oregon Retina's Dr. Yujen Wang frequently treats patients with diabetes, helping them to manage and treat symptoms related to diabetes. Diabetes causes a patient to experience high blood glucose (blood sugar) levels, which can damage the body's nerves, blood vessels and more.

Dr. Wang diagnoses and treats eye conditions commonly associated with diabetes, including diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and cataracts. Patients with diabetes are 40 percent more likely to experience glaucoma and 60 percent more likely to have cataracts, according to the American Diabetes Association.

Small blood vessels in the eye are responsible for keeping the eye tissue alive, moist and working well. Damage due to diabetes can ultimately lead to vision loss and even blindness if left untreated. Patients with diabetes are also more likely to experience complications that can further worsen eye problems, including high blood pressure.

"Patients with diabetes should visit an ophthalmologist at least once a year," says Dr. Wang, a Medford, Oregon eye doctor. "This is true even if the patient is experiencing vision problems or not."

At an eye doctor visit, Dr. Wang can dilate your eyes, which allows him to view the retina, or tissue on the inner eye's back portion. This involves placing eye drops into the eye to make the pupil, or black portion of the eye, larger.

This area can indicate early eye damage signs, allowing Dr. Wang to recommend treatments. Not all eye doctors are able to treat diabetes-related eye complications. However, Dr. Wang offers multiple treatments, including laser surgery, corticosteroid injections and vitrectomy.

Signs a patient may need to seek treatment for diabetes-related eye concerns include experiencing blurry or double vision, viewing dark spots, feeling pain in the eyes or having difficulty seeing out of the corner of your eyes. Eye redness that does not subside or pressure in the eyes are other symptoms that a patient would need to see Dr. Wang regarding.

"A diabetes diagnosis does not have to mean a patient will experience complications -- but it does mean a patient should be cautious," says Dr. Wang, a Medford diabetic eye care specialist. "Through careful evaluation and preventive care, I can work with patients to maintain their vision."
