Disturbance 93-L intensified into Tropical Storm Bertha overnight. Bertha is located over the northern end of Martinique. Movement is toward the west-northwest at 24 mph. The maximum sustained winds are near 50 mph. Tropical storm watches and warnings are in effect for many of the Caribbean Islands as well as the southeast Bahamas.
Bertha is expected to continue moving west-northwest through Sunday with little change in strength. By early next week, Bertha should begin moving northward and eventually recurve to the northeast in response to a trough in the jet stream along the U.S. East Coast. This pattern will also keep Bertha out of the Gulf of Mexico.
Elsewhere in the Atlantic Basin, there are no threats for tropical cyclone formation.
