First day of school: Freshmen at Peabody Magnet High get acclimated

Posted: Updated:
ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) -- As school bells rang throughout Rapides Parish, Freshmen at Peabody Magnet got their first taste of high school.

News Channel 5's Noelle Bellow spent some time on campus talking to students about their first day and learned if there's one thing Peabody has, it's pride.

"It's simply the best, better than the rest," said Junior Drum Major Bakari Piper.

"PRIDE is our acronym for our system, and it stands for positive, respectful, involved disciplined and engaged. We encourage our students to carry themselves in this manner," said new Principal Jamie Henagan.

At orientation, incoming freshman were able to get a glimpse of what it means to attend Peabody Magnet High School.

Freshmen Academy Leader Suzie Smith said, "this kind of gets them motivated. We're doing some team building activities, we're bringing in the dance line, the cheerleaders, the band so we want them to feel at home."

Henagan says unique mentoring programs between the students will also help them all to succeed.

"One of the biggest things we're doing that we hope will make a tremendous change is the Junior and Senior mentoring program; where they not only will work with the Freshman today, but they're going to follow them throughout the year. Its going to help them academically and socially," said Henagan.

For Freshman basketball player Reginald Givens, extracurricular'ss like 4-H Club are important. "Just to keep my head on straight and stay out of trouble. I feel like, so many people have done great things for me so I feel like why not give back."

As for upperclassmen, the urge to perform well academically is key.

Senior Ceerah Mcnell said, "I'm very excited, ready to get all my classes in, and have fun but still pay attention and get ready for college."

Piper said, "I think the school year is going to be a better year as far as the academics go because of the new administration."

Henagan agreed, "we really feel with how we're approaching them and the things we have in place that we are going to be more successful this year."
