BATON ROUGE, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - Alcohol and Tobacco Control agents spent the summer cracking down on businesses selling alcohol and tobacco to minors.

ATC Officials said they conducted 6,598 compliance checks and issued 895 citations during the agency’s 2014 Summer Crackdown. Of those citations, 505 were issued for alcohol sales and 390 were for tobacco sales.

In three months, ATC agents said they conducted more than double the number of compliance checks done last summer.

“The fact we are using only 16 & 17 year old operatives and getting this many sales is concerning. Let me be clear, there is nothing good that can come out of selling alcohol to a minor. And if you do, ATC will hold you accountable," said Commissioner Troy Hebert. "This permit is a privilege, not a right.”

ATC agents and employees also held nearly three dozen educational presentations statewide throughout the summer. Agents spoke to nearly 2,500 children and adults about the effects of early alcohol and tobacco use, as well as the dangers of synthetic drugs.
