ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - Nachman Elementary is getting both kids and parents excited about fitness and health.

Nachman Elementary's "Walk Night" promotes family fitness and family togetherness.

The event is organized by the physical education teachers at the school and consists of parents and their children watching around an exercise track. Jump ropes are also given out at the event to students who may want to get even more exercise.

The school makes exercising fun for kids.

"I like it because it is really fun to see your friends and get all the exercise you need," says student Madisyn Maxey.

Parents also feel the message this event sends is very important.

"It is still extremely important for their future because you teach them young to be healthy and eat healthy then they will carry it on as they get older," says parent Lizzy Neal. "If kids aren't healthy and doing what they're suppose to do with their bodies, then their minds are not going to work right."

Fitness experts say that in order for kids to stay healthy that parents must lead by example and become role models.

"Parents can motivate their kids by getting them outside or inside to a club and just try to increase activity," says LAC Head-Trainer Ronnie Schwartz.

By promoting this event, Nachman Elementary is helping parents make the step towards healthy living for both them and their children.
